im officially hopin on this guys bandwagon. i love judo throws and he had some nasty ones in the highlight reel. and the banana milk commercial is a typical hilariously wierd japanese commercial. all and all im down wit sexyama
1:32 mark is priceless. I see big things for Sexyama theres a reason this guy has never went to the final bell.
Of course every highlight video set to trendy Euro-club or rap music makes even an average MMA fighter look like a superhero, but Akiyama definitely seems to be the real deal. Good stand-up, definitely knows how to catch someone in an armbar, and is a finisher, which I love.
He's beaten Denis Kang, as has his 100 opponent Alan Belcher, which isn't exactly a day at the beach, and has a $hitload of fighting credentials. His judo game should play well in the Octagon, but I do think there are a few things he needs to check himself on.
First, is Akiyama's cardio. I don't think the guy has seen a final round, and in the UFC guys are fine with going to a decision, and routinely do. He needs to be ready for 15 minutes with an opponent who has more experience fighting in a cage than he does.
Second, he needs to keep his hands up, especially his left. Watching his highlight video revealed a tendency for Akiyama to hold his hands low, or drop them entirely. A UFC-level striker will notice that in a minute and adjust accordingly. A lot of UFC guys train with old-school Western boxing coaches, which is something he might not have seen fighting overseas.
Third, Akiyama seems fine with going to the ground, which is awesome for a fan of the ground game like myself, but in the UFC he's going to face opponents who have a lot of submission wrestling and BJJ training, and BJJ tweaked for the cage.
Also, no gi in the UFC, my friend, so best be ready to go Hawaiian style, skin on skin. It seemed like in a lot of those highlights he was wearing a gi, and I hope no part of his game is predicated on that.
Man, even Akiyama, doesn't live by an armbar or choke alone. He'd best be up on the full spectrum of submissions, and their escapes, or he's going to find himself in an uncomfortable situation.
Fourth, Akiyama needs to make sure he leaves his banana milk or baby oil or whatever the heck he smears on himself and his gi before fight time at home. Lord knows the BJ/greasegate thing was annoying enough, and Akiyama has had his share of post-fight extra-legal issues involving the use of something slippery. The last thing I want to see is this guy's debut marred by some sort of misconduct charge related to Oil of Olay or some such.
Finally, Akiyama needs to develop cage command. His game from what I've seen seems well-suited for a cage, probably even more so than a boxing ring, but he needs to make sure he watches enough UFC footage to see how UFC guys roll in the Octagon, both literally and figuratively.
Alan Belcher's skill-set is probably a great first bout for Akiyama, and I'm picking him to win, and to finish. However moving past Belcher, assuming he wins, he's going to face MW's a lot stronger and much better grapplers than he's used to, and a good many of them are going to see the new guy and think, "hmm, I'm going to Couture 101 this dude and see how he likes eating cage for 15 minutes".
I think Akiyama has a bright future in the UFC, and I'm definitely pulling for him to bust out something spectacular in his debut bout...
Dont be surpised if Kris asks you to be a writer for tis site someday. Good stuff bro.
Thanks for saying so, carls.
Kind words, for sure, but in light of the quality of writing and reporting here at mmafrenzy, I'm not sure I have the "tickets" for a ride this good. If asked I would certainly contribute to this site in any way possible, but really I'm just glad I found this site, and that there is an open forum for myself and everyone to express MMA thoughts, comments, and opinions...
