Correction: I was not by any means onlytrue1 trying to call you a casual fan right there. I know better and that was put in the wrong context in regards to you. In terms of punches landed and actual action yes I agree it would be boring. But I'd still love to see it and wouldn't be bored watching two super master genius alien-like skilled fighters go at it.

@Bigchris

You know your my boy right? But I'm about to contradict you to holy he11 and back my friend. If Silva went into that fight not at all fearing Forrests stand-up (which by all counts happens to be world class--just not Silva class which transcends that of mortal man imo) then what in the tarnaaaaation do you call Silvas actions against Cote and Leites? He didn't even begin to try to engage either of those guys seriously and not to take anything away from Cote he hasn't come close to putting forth the battles that Forrest has or beaten a Rampage ever. For him not to step in and piece up Leites more than he did was a little over cautious on his part to say the least. After putting forth lackluster appearances against those two, then step in and explode on Forrest has little to do with a big lack of respect on Silvas part, and more to do with him seeing his legacy being even slightly tarnished in any shape form or fashion, imo. Either that or he wanted to shut up all the people saying he was becoming a bore or was too tentative a fighter. I'll offer up him wanting to break his own mold as a strategy to throw Forrest way off balance even. If you go by your argument then your saying that Silva had a higher respect for Cote's and Leites fight game, then he did Forrests, particularly in the stand up realm and I find that assumption completely off the chain ludicrous.

Otherwise I can without a doubt see how to the casual fan this hypothetical matchup could be boring, but I would view it as a match for the ages even if their ducking and dodging each others strikes the whole time. If its a stalemate with one or two minutes left in the final round is it still going to remain boring at that point anyone?

Natural

For the sake of arguement sake.

Lets Pretend Lyoto and Silva were not or from the same camp or Friends, annnnnd wanted to fight each other!

Ok now that would be a interesting fight. But in terms of Striking I still believe Anderson superior. If they both came out striking and aggressive it would be an awesome fight.

But even if all that were true, Both guys are chess type fighters. They would score here and there and get outta there before 1 of'em got ko'd. Both are counter fighters and fight when you attack. Silva will attack once he got your rhythm and timing down. Lyoto attacks in spots looks to set up and then pounce. So I still see a boring fight.

I believe if somehow Rua beats Lyoto in October, then Anderson Silva will request to fight Rua for the LHW title early 2010..... I Highly doubt that Rua will beat Machida but if that does happen the BlackHouse enforcer Anderson Silva will fight for the LHW title

Silva only has 3 fights left on his UFC contract they should be quite interesting..

i believe silva opened up aggressive in the forrest fight because he didnt fear forrest's striking. its not like forrest has/had one punch ko power. anderson wasnt threatned imo.

the machida-evans fight... i believe machida was cautious and feared evans's hand speed and ko power. that was until machida realized he was the faster striker. that may have been why he opened up on evans. he saw his oppening and pounced. maybe part cautious/part gameplan.

to be fair i said anderson-machida would be a technical [boring to casual fans] fight. i would love to see it, but i doubt it will happen.

If you look at Lyoto's last couple fights and Silva's last fight they look like they're becoming he11a confident enough to open up and attack and engage finally. Silva opened up the Forrest fight with a quick step in and piece up without countering. In terms of strategy either guy could come in super aggressive and get some points or a potential KO out of surprise. It definitely could be boring but its not written in stone.

Big Chris
is right. Even if you made these guys fight, it would be boring as h3ll!!!
Not only that does any one remember when Anderson was uninspired to fight?? He wouldn't go all out and beat the guy and neither would Lyoto..

Anderson has the highest percentage of connect rate in the ufc.
Lyoto has the lowest in getting hit rate (lol) in the ufc.
Anderson has only lost 1 round since entering the ufc.
Lyoto has also lost only 1 round since entering the ufc.
Anderson is a deadly COUNTER striker!
Lyoto is a deadly COUNTER striker!
What do you get when the two fight??????? ONE SUPER BORING A$$ FIGHT!!

ill break down the anderson-machida fight. check this out...

first round and a half anderson and lyoto are both doing head feints and fake attackes. the crowd is booing like crazy after the first minute because they are blood thirsty. halfway through the 2nd, anderson decides to attack, machida sidesteps and counters and puts anderson down, rushes him and does GnP until yamasaki pulls him off. machida then tells rogan in the post fight interview he is retiring unbeaten and is going to go him and have some "lemonade"

seriously though these two will make for a "boring" fight. it will be a very technical fight, but if anyone can hang with anderson's striking and power and cause him to hold his hands high and not at his waist [aside from vitor] its machida. i would love to see it, but machida needs to clear out his division, yes he is the unbeaten champ, but he has yet to defend his title, and 205 is the most competitive division. plus, there is a young stud in strikeforce that looks to be a top contender in the ufc, and he looks to have the skills to beat machida. his name is mousasi, you guys might have heard of him.

@ fr702 - thanks for the correction.
You should have just gone ahead and edited it, bro. A mistake like that is unforgivable, especially coming from me.
;)

@ OT1 - believe me, dude, I was so pi$$ed I could have chewed thru a brick. I left him a voicemail that probably slagged his cell.
And honestly, if he'd taken out my Corvair, I would have popped his shoulder and giggled while I did it...

And yeah, Dana White is probably saving Anderson Silva a beating by not letting him fight at HW. Regardless of how devastating he is at 185, and even if he did sneak past Frank Mir with a sniper-like KO, the next HW he faced would drag him to the mat and beat on him like a silverback beats on a rival over a banana tree.
And don't even get me started on a Silva-Lesnar match-up...

Dana said in a recent interview that there's no way Silva is fighting heavyweight...he said there's a better chance he'd fight Roy Jones...Dana did say (LOOPHOLE) that the only way he'd allow it, is if Silva cleared out BOTH divisions as champion...

That's the only way I see Machida facing Silva...if it meant Silva wouldn't have a shot at ruling THREE potential weight classes unless they fought.

Only, I think it's because these two fighters have blown by their competition with ease! As much as im going for Rua, Machida is no joke. Anderson is no joke.

When I referred to this issue causing potential tangled webs of bullsh!t sempeck, your scenario was the type of thing I was getting at. Just would ask that the Frenzy extrapolate all the data and think about it is all.

Onlytrue1...Its not this particualr match-up that gets my spiderman boxers in a bunch; its how well this hypothetical match-up illustrates the larger issue of friends dodging friends in the octagon. To sum it up best, some day there will be a number one and number two contender who needs to fight to establish who gets the title and they will be good friends and they will fall upon the established precedent of "Hey we're friends you can't tell us to fight/compete" and I suppose I'm one of the many few that see an inherent problem in that.

Silva can beat whomever whenever at whatever weight to accomplish his goals and dreams???? {okay i dont see him nor want to see him fight brock} but you get the point.

I honestly think that Anderson Silva has just lost interest in the MW division, especially after seeing Demian Maia, who a lot of us, including myself, thought was being "frozen out" of the title picture.
No wonder he was smirking when they announced the decision that Maia had been KTFO'ed in less than half a minute by a man Silva had choked out fairly easily...

Okay to me this makes no sense at all.

#1. Anderson goes to lhw to face irvin and DEMOLISHED him. After the fight he said that he doesnt want to stay at 205 because that is his friend Lyoto's division and his belt. TWO MONTHS AFTER LYOTO BEAT TITO. No one at that time thought anyone was going to get past Rampage let alone have machida win the belt anytime soon.

#2 Anderson goes back to LHW after 2 lackluster fights at middleweight to face #4 ranked lhw in the world. DEMOLISHES him. This time his friend is now the chapion and says he doesnt want to fight him and never will.

#3 Anderson calls out Heavywieght Frank Mir. REALLY? REALLY?

Okay i know that a lot of people will disagree but if Big Nog gets a shot at Lesnar anytime soon he DOES have a good shot. Hes been against a lot of big guys.

I just think it would be ridiculous to see anderson jumping from all three wieght classes but not wanting to take the belt because of his two friends. Its almost like if lyoto didnt want to fight the winner of the rampage rashad fight.... so he can call up Anderson, and have Anderson call Dana so he can fight the winner so lyoto doesnt have to. These two as a team could run the lhw division forever. **** go ahead and give them tag team belts. Its all hypothetical but this Anderson Silva thing needs to stop. I agree with Natural. Not the same point he makes but this is getting a tad bit loopy.

If the next time I go out of town my boy uses my place as some crash pad to hook up with some trick he met online and doesn't clean up after himself, particularly changing the bed linens, and finishes an entire bottle of Grey Goose from my freezer without so much as a "thanks, bro", he's going to find himself Severn-choked on the front lawn the next time he cruises by...
;)

In principle I am sympathetic to that, as I'd be reluctant to try and knock one of my partners out. So lets all breath a sigh of relief that Silva and Machida are based in different weight classes. And lets all assume on faith that two great fighters who happen to be good friends who want the title never come close to getting a matchup.

Look, MMA is in its infancy as a genuine sport globally. And we ALREADY have two of the greatest not wanting to fight because their friends. More and more top tier fighters are hanging out and training together. As this trend goes up an order or two of magnitude it can cause a stalemate eventually. I think as the sport evolves guys are going to look at it more and more as a sport instead of just labeling it one, and be able to knock the sh!t out of each other and shake hands afterwards. If that doesn't happen does anyone see any bad ramifications for MMA at all?

natural, i see where your coming from...but mma is different than other sports in the i dont wanna fight my friend aspect......I mean your punching, kicking, kneeing, elbowing your opponents face and body...then your slamming them, choking them, cranking there arms, shoulders, wrists, legs, knees.elbows, ffeet and all there joints in ther body.....its a dangerous sport and i can definitly see why they wouldnt want to fight...why would anyone want to see the fight when if they do fight they will not fight at there full potential theyll be easier on each other......and hey im just saying I would never fight my best friend in a full contact mma fight

Natural, in theory I agree with everything you're saying, but in practice if Machida and Silva refuse to fight, then what can the UFC do?

WOW, damm as soon as I write a mini article on this topic someone writes a thread on it. (SEE FORUM THREAD POSSIBLE FIGHTS FOR MORE INFO) Let Machida further prove himself...and if he does and Anderson wants to keep fighting at LHW, why the he11 not let them fight? Why the he11 not MAKE them fight? Is this a sport or is sportsmanship out the window because jaws are getting cracked? I personally find a disturbing discrepancy with people wanting to call MMA a "sport" but finding it cool and acceptable for two guys not to "compete" against each other because their friends. I think when you start to have it both ways a certain amount of hypocrisy is entering the equation and its kinda ghey imo. Sports in general is a tough business and only more so for the bloody sport of cagefighting. That means fighters are going to have to make tough decisions, like just because you step into a cage with a guy and try to lay him out in front of millions, does that mean goodbye friendship? I put forth the argument if your not tough AND sportmanslike enough to offer up that plate of nasty food and eat it then your not really fighter or champion material. Its almost 2010 if friendship fights are out and it becomes acceptable to the sport its going to cause some seriously tanlged webs of bullsh!t. And just on the premise that your introducing a factor into the sportsworld that has never been tested. Friends can't compete against each other?...LOL....do I need to reference every epic sports match that included friends and even family members on opposing teams or one on one?
