In no numerical order just listing them

Now what I wish to do with this little thread is to bring a little perspective of the possible Fight Of The Year, Knock Out Of The Year, Submission Of The Year, Upset of the Year, (MMA) Story of the Year and Dominant performance of the Year.. These aren't final picks or whatever and are open for debate as usual, but with one Major Card left in the Year 2009, I thought I would try and grab your guys perspective

FOTY

Thomson v Melendez II Dec 19,2009

Diego Sanchez v Clay Guida June 20,2009

Miguel Torres v Mizugaki April 5, 2009

Brown v Faber II June 7,2009

Antonio Banuelos v Scott Jorgensen June 7, 2009

Yoshiro Akiyama v Alan Belcher June 11,2009

Randy Couture v Big Nog Aug 29, 2009

Donald Cerrrone v Benson Henderson Oct 10,2009

Lyoto Machida v Shogun Rua Oct 24, 2009

Carlos Condit v Martin Kampmann April 1, 2009

KO of the Year

Dan Henderson KO'S Michael Bisping @UFC 100 Thats the one that came immediately to my mind, feel free to add yours, ofcourse anything by Aldo this year or Scott Smith would work, Fedor v Rogers thats good too...

Submission of the Year

Penn subs KenFlo RNC

Damien Maia subs Chael Sonnen with a triangle choke

Toby Imada with a inverted triangle choke on Jorge Masvidal

Upset of the Year

Tim Sylvia upset by Ray Mercer

Story of the Year

I'm throwing the Fedor situation out there for this one, o and the Hype train known as UFC 94 Penn v GSP II

Dominant performance of the Year

BJ Penn v Diego Sanchez imo

********
With time given I will post some videos of what I'm talking about esepecially the FOTY's

BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez-Lightweight Championship-

I think that this has all the makings of fight of the year. With the pace Diego likes to set and with BJ's new found gas tank this will for sure be a crazy fight. I think that the difference between Digeo Sanchez and BJ's previous opponents is that Sanchez is as if not more cocky then Bj, Diego is suoer confident in himself and he feels that he can beat Penn, something that Penn's previous opponents were lacking IMO.

BJ Penn can obviously end this fight standing or on the ground, somthing that i think Diego cannot do. Even though Diego has improved his striking a lot it's still isn't that good yet, but what can help him in this fight is if he can push the pace on Penn right from the start and not stop, he'll be able to probly overwhel, Penn who isn't known for his cardio. Sanchez should press and press the fight but do it in a smart and controlled manner because BJ has super sick Boxing and if Diego goes Forrest Griffin on BJ then all BJ has to do is look for an opening and boom fight over.

I think that Deigo's wrestling is strong enough that he can control Penn on the ground, Diego is a super strong dude, especially at 155 and he has a killer mount, i think that most guys if not all that he has mounted he has finished impressively, but the thing with Diego is that he doesn't have the best takedown defense so if Bj decides to take Sanchez down the way he did with Ken-flo then he'd be able to submit Sanchez easioly i think.

Diego should try his best to make it to at least the 4th round and once there really push the pace on Bj and go for the kill because although Bj's cardio has improved a lot, i still think that he'll gas in the later rounds, especially if Diego pushes the pace on him.

I think that Bj will try and pick Diego apart with his Boxing and then try and take him down and either gNp a tko or look to hook in a sub. I can't see Sanchez scoring a sub because his Jitz isn't that good and Bj doesn't tap period, but i can see Sanchez controlling BJ on the ground and scoring a ref stoppage, but in order to do that he'll have to really go after Penn because even GSP at 170 had trouble taking Penn down so Diego has his work cut out for him for sure.

On paper Bj should win wherever the fight goes, but like we've said before, BJ is his own worst enemy and Diego is a dude who is super tough, super strong and crazy confident and sometimes confidence can go a very long way especially for a guy as talented as Diego Sanchez.

Diego Sanchez needs to push the pace from the beginning and not get careless or reckless and look for takedowns if the oppoetunity presents itself. He needs to watch out for Bj's big punches and try to score some kicks on Bj's lead leg to slow him down.

Bj should make no bones and just take Diego Sanchez down and score a sub, that's where he has the best chance of winning because if he decides to stand with Sanchez, the fight can problably go more than 2 or 3 rounds and BJ might find himself gassing while diego speeds up because just like BJ is super hard to finish so is Diego Sanchez and if this fight does go past the 3rd round i'm giving the edge to Sanchez cardio and his cockynessl. I think both guys have their hands full in this one but like always i'm picking Diego Sanchez to get the "upset" and beat BJ Penn via tko..Sanchez is a crazy dude, he's super tough and has great confidence in himself, Bj Penn is "Bj Penn" but Diego is super determined and Bruce Lee once said that "an opponent determined to win no matter what the cost is the most dangerous opponent to have because he'll never stop fighting until victorious"

Apologies for the delay, these should have been done days ago and well there have been some factors keeping me from doing so, I'm going to do something a bit different this time around.. I'm going to give "my top ten" per each weight class (usually I do top 15) but I'm going to add people to watch ie ones that I believe are on the "cusp" of cracking the top ten... Depending on what Kris decideds to do as far as rankings, I will make my own every month, but please be patient, I do my best and here we go

HW

1. Fedor
2. Brock Lesnar
3. Big Nog
4. Shane Carwin
5. Frank Mir
6. Cain Velasquez
7. Junior dos Santos
8. Josh Barnett
9. Randy Couture
10.Fabricio Werdum

{The fighters in this division that I'm keeping my eye on amongst others are, Brett Rogers, Alistair Overeem, GG, Jeff Monson, Ben Rothwell and Sergei Kharitonov }

The HW division is well honestly thin, and TUF 10 was suppose to make up for that but it didn't find the up and coming talent that TUF made its name on, I mean well The Darkness is an up and coming talent but with Brock out and Overeem eating too much horse meat, Where is this division headed?

LHW

1. Lyoto Machida
2. Shogun Rua/Quinton Jackson
4. Rashad Evans
5. LIL Nog
6. Forrest Griffin
7. Gegard Mousasi
8. Dan Henderson {Free Agent}/Thiago Silva
10.Rich Franklin

(Jon Jones, Matt Hamill, Luiz Cane, Keith Jardine, Brian Stann, Steve Cantwell, Babalu these cats are on the verge of making thier names larger and becoming a factor in the LHW division with a few wins, Hamill v Jones will answer questions)

No Anderson Silva, because well he isn't going to fight for the title as long as Lyoto has it, with the destruction @ 101 of Forrest you could easily put him in the 4~8 spots if it makes you feel better by all means go for it :P

Rua earned his spot with the UFC 104 fight he had with Machida, Quinton was the #2 before TUF and seriously he still is there, but we shall see what he has instore when he returns, imagine if he trained he might still be champ.....

MW

1. Anderson Silva
2. Dan Henderson {Free Agent}
3. Nate Marquardt
4. Vitor Belfort
5. Damien Maia
6. Akiyama
7. Chael Sonnen
8. Okami
9. Misaki
10.Jorge Santiago

(Jake Sheilds, Jacare, Mamed Khalidov, Paulo Filho these are 4 MW's that we should watch, Plus I cannot wait for Wanderlei v Bisping, I'm definitely wathcing these two)

Sheilds beating Mayhem doesn't really make him in the top ten in the world thats the truth, Lawler bout was a "catch weight" bout right Justin :P imo he is like 11 or 12 in the world but lets see what he does... While we are talking about Strikeforce Cung Le doesn't deserve to be ranked even with his return on the 19th, Mousasi is fighting in the LHW divison so he isn't ranked either... Sonnen beating the **** out of Okami gains him that spot, I might not like him but he was impressive....

WW

1. GSP
2. Jon Fitch
3. Thiago Alves
4. KOS
5. Dan Hardy
6. Mike Swick
7. Paulo Thiago/Matt Hughes
9. Marius Zaromskis
10.Paul Daley/Carlos Condit/Martin Kampmann

(AJ, Dan Hornbuckle, Dustin Hazlett, Ben Saunders, these guys are young hungry and their skill is growing each time out, they have been impressive and have learned from their losses to come back better, they are a fresh breath in this division)

Well The Greatness has defeated the 2,3 and 4 guys in the Division now onto Hardy, thats bout all I have for that...

LW

1. BJ Penn
2. Shinya Aoki
3. KenFlo
4. Kawajiri
5. Frankie Edgar/Gray Maynard
7. Diego Sanchez
8. Tyson Griffin
9. Eddie Alvarez/Sean Sherk
10.Josh Thomson/Gilbert Melendez

(These names are important... Clay Guida, Mizuto Hirota, Gomi, JZ, Shoalin)

145ers

1. Jose Aldo
2. Mike Brown
3. Urijah Faber
4. Rafael Assuncao
5. Bibiano Fernandes
6. Hatsu Hioki/Omigawa/Marlon Sandro {they need to all fight again}
9. Hirayuki Takaya
10.Wagnney Fabiano

(Joe Warren, Kid Yamamoto, Imanari... All known names but kinda on a slide they can easily become players again in this thing)

135ers

1. Brain Bowles
2. Miguel Torres
3. Masakatsu Ueda

Edit(s) done by~ FR702 {1am est Dec 6th} due to just forgetting Sherk and Hughes

I was reading a debate someone was having about fighters being finished a few days ago on the main site and it got me thinking. Now I don't remember the main conversation, but they brought up the Penn vs. St. Pierre II fight.

Im well aware that a KO, TKO or any type of submission is considered finishing a fight, but this person suggested that Penn was NOT finished because his corner threw in the towel. Now that made me think this person was right, because technically Penn himself did not quit, his brother threw in the towel.

My brother insisted that I was wrong because regardless of anything, Penn did not try to go for a round 4, but St. Pierre did not force him to quit nor did he KO him in anyway.

I have a feeling of what people are going to write and I please ask you to be fair. Im not trying to start a BJ was a b--ch, he gave up, GSP owned him, im just asking an honest question. What is considered finishing a fight under those circumstances?

In a sport where a bullet proof mug is about as valuable as dirt in Waterworld. There are a few fighters who seem to have an advantage over their oponents simply because they sport a sturdy chin. But it is what it is, just like how some guys are fast, tall, freakishly powerful or have a 4 inch reach over someone who is taller then them. All intricate details that make up the beautiful world that is MMA. But before I go too Frank Mir on you all lets get back to the topic at hand. Of who is the current holder of the sturdiest mandible(or jaw for short)

My top ten would go like this, no particular order as it is way to tough to call.

Big Nog - Legenday
B.J. Penn - has he ever been rocked?
Patrick Cote - Andersons best shots didnt even faze him
Rampage Jackson - just look at the size of his head
Dan Henderson - never been KOed
Sam Stout - see second Fisher fight
Keith Jardine - this is one of those joke things
Gomi - also has never been KOed
Mark Hunt - would have had the top spot if it wasnt for Manhoef
Faber - he has two
Chris Leben - see any fight besides the Anderson fight
Anderson Silva - once again has he ever been rocked?

If I had to pick one I would likely go with B.J.

Its becoming quite apparent this past year, that the UFC's current champions are not planning on losing anytime soon. Sure some of them have a tough couple of fights ahead but will likely be the favorite and still champ once the smoke settles.

What I would like to ask the FrenZied. Is who they think would have the belt if our current champs were to not exists sort of speak.

For myself it would go like this

Featherweight and Bantamweight are easy cause Torres and Faber would still be on top.

Lightweight - anyone who knows me or visits this site atleast once a week knows who Id put here.

Welterweight - Alves for sure IMO. Fitch is pretty much the same fighter as the first time they fought. Whereas Thiago is bigger, faster, stronger and more well rounded.
Although I think Swick could maybe beat him.

Middleweight - Henderson without question. Hes proved that he can beat one of the best MW of all time in Franklin(although that fight was close) do well against Anderson. And survive against one of the top BJJ guys in the UFC in Palharres. A fight between him and Marquardt would be great, but Nate's chin would be his downfall.

Lightheavy - This ones tough as the LHW div has allways been a toss-up. But at the end of the day Id give it to Jackson. I think he would have beaten Rashad had he not been injured and likely defended it against Shogun or whoever else challenged him. Forrest is allways a wild card, and Mousasi by next year could have it regardless. If he were to ever come over.

Heavyweight - This is another tough one as you could easily make the case for Randy Carwin and Mir. I think Mir would have it right now, but Carwin would beat him the first chance he got.

thinking as if bj gets past diego and gray. i think this is pointless just as in the title of this. GSP would dominate again except the only difference i see is that it would go all rounds since bj has better cardio IMO.

personally i don't think that bj will get past both diego and maynard i will be pulling for them both. and if he did the only reason they would except a GSP vs. bj III would be for business. LET'S GO NIGHTMARE AND THE BULLY!

When Diego Sanchez made the move to 155 i thought it was awesome and i knew that he'd be a contender for the title, but when he beat Joe Stevenson by decision i felt that i was problably wrong being that he should have been able to take Stevenson out IMO, BUT it was his first fight at 155 and the cut sure played a part in his inability to finish Stevenson. When he fought Clay Guiad he looked a lot more full and more solid and in a lot better form than he did against Joe Daddy. After the first round of Sanchez-Guida i knoew that if anyone could beat BJ Penn at 155 it's Diego Sanchez. Not only did his cardio impress me, but he out paced Clay fu*ing Guida, i mean when the fight started both fighters were fresh and it was Sanchez who got the better of everything early on, i couldn't believe that he was outworking Guida who is known to have the craziest pace at 155, but he did and beat Guida down worse then i ever seen anyone beat him down, that fight made me a believer that Sanchez can beat Penn.

BJ Penn is an all around better fighter than anyone at 155, and now that he's back in shape it'll for sure be very difficult to beat him, but Sanchez is a strong dude with a great wrestling base, Sanchez has a very strong mount with very good sub skills. BJ obviously has the better stand-up, but if Sanchez comes at him the way he did against Guida he might just be able to pull off an upset very early. Not that Sanchez is better than Penn it's that he went crazy on Guida and didn't even get tired. Sanchez has decent power in his punches but not ko power like Penn, but he does have enough power in his punches and kicks to finish Penn. I honestly don't know id Penn would be able to hang with the pace that Sanchez showed against Guida, it's very possible that Sanchez rushes Penn at the sound of the bell and overwhelms Penn because Penn although likes to attack right off the bat also, Penn likes to jab and pick at his opponents, he doesn't unload the way Sanchez does.

On the ground Penn wins period, unless Sanchez uses his wrestling which he has not in a very long time, unless it's Sanchez who can take Penn down,Penn wins on the ground preiod, but if Sanches were to take Penn down, he;s shown to have great control and brutal gNp. This

This fight has fight of the night and even fight of the year written all over it because Diego Sanchez is a tugh motherfu*ker who always comes in ready to bust you up and really kick your a$$, he doesn't fear any fighter and is sooo cocky that he sometimes forgets who he;'s fighting, but that's what makes him who he is, his confidence and cockyness IMO are a big reason why he has gotten waay better, but can he show up against a Penn who is newly hungry and refoucussed on beating everyone's a$$ and reminding everyone who he really is?

Sanchez will be a tougher test than florian was for sure because Ssnchez is jsut as or stronger than Penn, he has a good chin and has decent power to that can put Penn down, Sanchez has an all around very good ground game and good sub defense and most important IMO, Sanchez can really push the pace on Penn and overwhelm him in the cardio and that can be a huge factor in the way this fight plays out.

Standing i thnk that Penn still has the advantage, his boxing is too good, his punches are fast and can drop anyone if they conncect and he doesn;t have to worry about the ground because he'll submit anyone on the ground. He just has to worry about Sanchez's first assault and worry about keeping up with Diego's pace which Penn is known for not having the best cardio.

This should be one of the best 155 fights if the not the best one ever and Penn should be foucussing on Sanchez who is hungrier than ever and on a roll rather than a third fight with GSP who will kick his a$$ again anyway.

here is my top 5

1.Anderson Silva
2.GSP
3.Fedor
4.lyoto
5.torres

the reason i have anderson on top. i think he earned it with that ko of forrest griffin who was former LHW champion. i hope GSP tries to make it him on top because unlike GSp anderson silva and Bj penn fight above their weight-class to help prove they're the best. even though i dont have Bj placed. he would be 6 in mine.

okay guys, 101 is a few days away, who do you guys think will win and how?

bj-kenny: I do not see anyway kenny hangs with bj. in the standing game bj has better boxing which should nullify kenny's muay thai. from what ive seen in kenny's last few fights his wrestling is average at best imo. his jitz is good, but bj's is top 5 in mma imo. i would like for kenny to beat bj, but i dont see anyone at 155 beating bj. im not a bj supporter at all, but i cannot deny his skills. bj by 3rd round RNC, if it makes it that far. kenny has talked alot of $hit and i dont think he will back it up. bj hasnt really gotten into a verbal war with kenny which worries me because that means he is really focusing on training.

anderson-forrest: I am not a fan of anderson's at all, i do not like this cockyness he has in his interviews. he seems to think he is the greatest mma guy ever which he isnt. but again this is the same issue i have with bj. i dont like him as a person even though i never met either guy but there is no denying anderson's skills. the one weakness i have noticed in anderson's game is his ground game, mainly fighting off of his back. lutter mounted him, travis fu<kin lutter mounted anderson with ease and did ground and pound and anderson looked like a chump, i promise you if forrest gets into mount with anderson, he will try some GnP, but he is good enough in jitz to take the opportunity with the armbar when he is in full mount. anderson doesnt move around when he is on his back, he doesnt try to block transitions, which is weird considering he is a blackbelt from the nog brothers.

Forrest is going to be bigger, stronger, and have a slight reach advantage against anderson which means anderson will have to get in close with forrest to land shots. that puts him in danger of taking shots from forrest, forrest may not have 1 punch ko power, however he is quick enough to land multiple shots to maybe warrant a ref stoppage. Forrest also isnt going to back down or be discouraged when anderson hits him or kicks him, which is new for anderson. we saw how mediocre[sp] he looked against cote who imo is a smaller forrest. forrest's leg kicks should help him in the fight, and with anderson's notorious slow starts i think the first round goes to forrest. since its a 3 round fight instead of a fiver, i give the advantage to forrest. i dont consider it a upset if forrest beats anderson, however if forrest ko's anderson i will be shocked. i like forrest in this one, and i think he wins by sub.

almedia-grove: i see almedia winning this by some sort of arm sub whether it be by armbar, triangle, or kimura. kendall's long arms will prove to be his downfall against a solid bjj guy and almedia is smart enough to take advantage of it. i know a triangle isnt a primary arm sub, however almedia can pull on one of the long arms to set it up imo.

amir-hendricks: eh, i dont know too much about either guys styles/techniques, but i believe they are both undefeated. hendricks is a 4 time all american in wrestling if im not mistaken, and amir is a wrestler's kryptonite[he is a bjj fighter]. dont be suprised if this is a stand up battle. ill go with hendricks by tko

im not really concerned about the other bouts except for two.

leites-sakara: i think sakara will win this one by brutal ground and pound, and if he does dont be suprised if leites is cut.

villefort-lennox: if villefort is the guy i remember reading a few articles on about American Top Team, they said he is a stud and a monster. if he is training with those guys then i wouldnt doubt it, imo that camp is loaded with monsters and any training you get there is beneficial. i hope this fight is short so i can see it when one of the main card fights ends early. villefort by ko.

Since BJ challenged GSP to a rematch and began his normal pre-fight trash talk, I said to myself "Man, this dude better back up everything he's saying" and of course we all know how that ended up. It wasn't until the "Grease Gate" accusations that I started to not only question his heart of a champion, but his reputation and I started to think about how this would impact how he is remembered as a fighter. You'd be surprised how easily one specific event can completely overshadow your career in a negative way. ie: Mark McGuire, Barry Bonds, Michael Vick, Chris Brown etc...I am in no way comparing BJ's trash talk and "grease gate" accusations to steroid and domestic abuse. I'm just saying that BJ, IMO has a lot to prove in this Florian fight. He's IMO tainted his reputation by half assing his training, talking trash and not backing it up, giving up after criticizing others who he feels also gave up, AND making ridiculous excuses for losing a fight. He's obviously a sore loser and one could argue that he's one of those fighters who lacks true appreciation for the art and i'm just curious to see what you all have to say about the potential blow BJ Penn's Legacy will suffer if he loses to the first legit contender @ 155 in a long time, Kenny Florian.

Something to keep in mind.
This loss to florian, if it happens, will follow everything i just mentioned. The criticsm of his heart and dicipline as a fighter, the beat down to GSP and "grease gate" accusations.

How will BJ Penn be remembered if he loses his LW championship after all this?
